OpenAI's latest funding round has closed at an 852 billion dollar valuation, with Nvidia completing the final 10 billion dollar instalment of a 30 billion dollar commitment. The company is already targeting a further raise of about 30 billion dollars at a valuation near 1.4 trillion dollars, according to the Venture Capital channel, which attributes the new target to the cost of its compute build-out.
The number that matters is the second one
A round closing at 852 billion dollars is a fact. A new round being sought at 1.4 trillion, before the ink is dry on the first, is a statement about the rate at which capital is being consumed. The gap between the two figures — roughly 550 billion dollars of implied repricing — is not earned over a quarter by revenue. It is set by what the next investor will pay for exposure to the build-out.
That build-out is the whole story. Compute is the line item, and the supplier who has written the largest cheque, Nvidia, is also the company selling the hardware the money buys. A commitment that returns to the vendor as purchase orders is a different instrument from an ordinary equity investment, and it is the structure that will decide whether these valuations look like financing or like circular bookkeeping.
Why an Ethiopian reader should care about a Californian round
Capital at this scale sets the price of everything downstream. Data-centre capacity, the chips inside it, and the engineers who design it are being bid for by a handful of firms with balance sheets of this size. Any African operator planning local hosting, any bank costing an AI deployment, and any government costing a national cloud is buying into a market where the marginal buyer has nearly a trillion dollars of paper behind it.
Open
Neither the terms of the closed round nor the structure of the proposed raise has been published. It is not stated whether the 1.4 trillion dollar figure is a pre-money or post-money target, who is leading it, or what share of the proceeds is already contracted to compute suppliers.
