Ethiopian Airlines has signed a codeshare agreement with China Southern Airlines, extending passenger connections beyond the routes the two carriers already fly between Ethiopia and China and linking further destinations across Africa and Asia.
A codeshare sells seats; it does not add aircraft
The distinction matters for what this changes. A codeshare lets each airline sell the other's flights under its own code, so a passenger books one ticket, checks baggage once, and is the responsibility of one carrier across a journey operated by two. No new route is created and no aircraft is added.
What it buys is reach into the other carrier's home network. For Ethiopian, that means Chinese domestic destinations beyond the airports it already serves — cities it can now sell to without flying to. For China Southern, it means the African network that Ethiopian has spent two decades building out of Addis Abeba, which no Chinese carrier could replicate directly.
The hub is the asset being rented
Ethiopian's commercial position rests on Bole as a connecting point between Asia and Africa. Each partnership of this kind monetises that position without capital expenditure, which is the attractive part when foreign currency is rationed and aircraft are bought in dollars.
It also deepens a trade corridor that already matters more to Ethiopia than most. China is a principal source of Ethiopia's imported capital goods and a principal creditor, and air connectivity between the two is a direct input to both the freight business and to the traffic that carries business travellers and traders.
For Ethiopian itself, the strategic consideration runs the other way too. A codeshare makes the partner's network available, and makes the partner a potential competitor who now understands your network rather better than before.

Neither airline has stated which routes and destinations fall under the agreement, when selling begins, whether cargo is included, or whether frequent-flyer reciprocity forms part of it.
