Brent Fell Six Dollars in Three Hours on a Headline Nobody Confirmed

Brent crude fell from 111.97 dollars to 105.95 dollars in three hours on a single unconfirmed headline, then recovered above 108 dollars once the story was contradicted. WTI December futures made the same journey, dropping from 101.37 to 95.25 dollars before moving back above 97.

The headline

The report said Qatar and Pakistan had brokered a compromise between the United States and Iran, under which Iran would receive interest on 6 billion dollars of funds frozen in Qatar in exchange for a confidential IAEA inspection. A person involved in the talks then said reports that a deal was close were wrong.

The ten-year US Treasury yield traced the same arc, dipping to 5.07 percent before returning near 5.10 percent.

Why a rumour moves the price six dollars

Because there is nothing underneath it. The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at its lowest level since 1982, which removes the buffer that would normally absorb a supply scare in either direction. In a market with no cushion, the price has to do all the adjusting, and an unverified wire story is enough to move it by more than five percent and back inside a single session.

For Ethiopia the number that matters is not the swing but the level it swung around. A fuel import bill is settled in dollars the country does not have in abundance, and the spread between 95 and 112 dollars a barrel is the difference between a manageable import line and one that crowds out other foreign-currency needs. A market this reactive to unconfirmed news is also a market in which forward planning against a central price assumption is close to guesswork.

Open

Neither Washington, Tehran, Doha nor Islamabad has confirmed or denied that talks on this structure are taking place, and the IAEA has not commented on a confidential inspection. The source of the original report has not been established. Nor is it clear whether the six-dollar move reflected the specific terms described or simply any signal that Iranian barrels might return to the market.
