Two Chipmakers Are Expected to Deliver 36 Percent of S&P 500 Earnings Growth

Micron and Nvidia are expected to account for 36 percent of all S&P 500 earnings growth in the third quarter of 2026, contributing 5.2 and 4.6 percentage points respectively to the index's projected 27 percent year-on-year growth.

The next eight contributors are projected to add 8.2 points, about 30 percent of the total. The remaining 490 companies are expected to add 9.2 points — 34 percent.

Put the other way: ten companies are forecast to produce roughly two thirds of the earnings growth of the five hundred.

The number underneath the number

Strip out those top ten contributors and the picture inverts. Earnings growth across the rest of the index is estimated to decline 11 percent year on year.

The headline 27 percent and the underlying minus 11 percent describe the same market. One is what the index reports. The other is what most companies in it are actually doing. Never in recorded history has concentration of this kind been observed in the index.

What a frontier market should take from it

The practical reading for anyone in Addis Abeba allocating capital or reading global risk appetite is that the index has stopped being a proxy for the broad American corporate economy and become a leveraged position on a handful of semiconductor and AI balance sheets.

That matters for Ethiopian exposure in two directions. Sentiment transmits: when those few names reprice, emerging and frontier allocations get cut first regardless of local fundamentals — a dynamic visible in the same session's rotation out of equities and into Treasuries. And it means global "risk-on" signals currently carry far less information about underlying demand for commodities, freight and consumer goods than the headline suggests.

Open

These are projections, not results. The concentration figure assumes current analyst estimates hold through the full reporting season, and the minus 11 percent for the other 490 has not been tested against actuals.
