A fire at the Wolaita Sodo University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital was brought under control by local residents, who fought it before it could spread further, Tikvah Ethiopia reported on Sunday night.
The blaze damaged three departments: surgery, internal medicine, and outpatient care. The cause is under investigation.
A referral hospital, offline in part
Wolaita Sodo's comprehensive specialized hospital is a referral facility for the zone and the districts around it. The three departments reported damaged are not peripheral. Surgery and internal medicine are where a referral hospital earns the designation; outpatient is the door through which most patients arrive.
Damage to all three at once means referrals that would ordinarily stop at Wolaita Sodo now travel further, at the patient's cost and at the receiving hospital's.
The detail worth noticing
The fire was contained by the public, not by a fire service. That is reported as a credit to the residents, and it is. It is also a statement about what emergency response exists in a zonal capital — and a question for anyone running a facility, a factory or a warehouse outside Addis Abeba about what they are actually insured against and who would turn up.
Open
No casualty figure has been released. Nor has the hospital or the Wolaita Zone administration said which services are suspended, for how long, or where patients are being redirected. The investigation into the cause has not reported.
