The Ethiopian Electricity Service has upgraded and put into operation a Telegram chatbot that lets postpaid residential customers submit their own monthly meter readings, Fana Television reported.
The system is aimed at customers whose meters are not read during the normal reading period. Rather than wait for a meter reader who did not arrive, the customer can file the reading themselves within an allowed window after the normal reading period closes, and have a correct figure recorded.
The problem it is actually solving
When a meter is not read, the customer is not spared a bill — they are given an estimate. Estimated bills are the quiet tax of a utility that cannot reach every meter every month: they overcharge some customers, undercharge others, and in both cases they corrupt the consumption data the utility needs to plan supply.
For a business on a postpaid connection, an estimate is worse than an inconvenience. It makes electricity an unpredictable line item, it makes a disputed bill a matter of argument rather than evidence, and it defers the reconciliation to a later month when the correction arrives as a spike.
Self-reporting is the cheapest available fix. It costs the utility nothing per reading, it works on a messaging app most customers already have, and it turns a missed visit into a recorded number rather than a guess.
Worth noting what it is not
This is a reporting channel, not a smart meter. The customer still reads the dial; the utility still has to trust or verify the figure. It narrows the gap between what is consumed and what is billed without closing it, and it depends on a customer bothering to file.
Open
Fana's account does not name the chatbot handle, say whether non-residential and business postpaid customers are included, state the length of the window for late submissions, or explain how a self-reported figure is verified or disputed.
