Gambella town was calmer and saw no shooting, residents told Tikvah Ethiopia, but normal daily activity has not resumed and people are still being displaced.
Residents described the calm as holding while ordinary business remains well below what it was. Displacement has continued inside the town itself: people from 04 kebele have moved into 05 and 01 kebeles. Separately, a revenge conflict in the gold mining area of Lunga kebele, in Abobo district, has pushed another group out of their homes.
Quiet is not the same as working
The distinction the residents are drawing is the one that matters commercially. An absence of gunfire restores the headline; it does not restore the market day, the transport run, or the worker who has moved three kebeles away from the job. A town can be safe and still not functioning, and the gap between the two is where small businesses fail.
Internal displacement within a single town is also a specific kind of signal. People moving between kebeles rather than out of the region are making a short, reversible bet — staying close enough to go home. It suggests residents expect the situation to turn one way or the other soon.
The gold is the harder problem
The Abobo displacement is not spillover from the town's unrest but a separate dispute in a gold mining area. Artisanal gold is one of the few sources of hard currency the National Bank can buy domestically, and conflicts over mining ground tend to outlast the political events around them because the asset does not move.
Open
The accounts come from residents speaking to Tikvah and are not attributed by name; no official figure for the displaced has been published, and no regional or federal statement on either the town or the Abobo mining dispute has been issued.
