Megech Dam Opens After Almost Two Decades, Set to Irrigate 17,000 Hectares

The Megech Irrigation Dam outside Gondar was officially commissioned, closing out a project that has run for close to two decades through repeated delays and contractor changes. It is set to irrigate more than 17,000 hectares and to address the drinking water shortage in Gondar and surrounding towns.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the project and said it brings "comprehensive economic revival" to Gondar and the towns around it.

The number nobody agrees on

How long Megech took depends on who is counting. Fana Television put the delay at 20 years. Tikvah Ethiopia reported the project as having been under construction for 18 years in one item and "more than 16 years" in another. Birr Metrics described "nearly two decades of planning, delays, and contractor changes."

The spread is not pedantry — it is the difference between a project that slipped and a project that stalled. What the accounts agree on is the shape: a scheme begun in the early 2000s, repeatedly promising delivery, repeatedly not delivering, and inaugurated this week.

One Tikvah item filed hours before the inauguration reported that the dam would be completed in the next fiscal year — which suggests either that commissioning has run ahead of full completion, or that the distinction between the two was not clear even to people reporting it on the day.

What 17,000 hectares means

Irrigated hectares are the unit that matters for anyone in agro-processing. Gondar's farmland has been rain-dependent, and this year's reporting from elsewhere in the country has shown what rain-dependence costs: in Afar, a family harvested almost nothing from eight hectares after the rain fell for two days in June and stopped, while a 50kg sack of wheat moved from 1,200 birr to 7,000 birr.

A dam that converts 17,000 hectares to scheduled water changes the supply calculation for processors sourcing from the region — if the distribution canals, which are a separate build, deliver.

Open

The commissioning announcement did not come with a final cost figure, and the project faces scrutiny over cost and timeline overruns. Neither the irrigation command area's delivery schedule nor the Gondar water supply connection timetable has been published. The gap between "commissioned" and "irrigating 17,000 hectares" is measured in canal infrastructure, and nobody has said how much of it exists.
