Ronaldo Gets a 30-Day Ban and a £215 Fine From the Portuguese FA

The Portuguese Football Federation has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a fine of £215 for leaving his country's international camp last month.

A disproportion worth noticing

The two numbers do not belong to the same world. Thirty days removes a player from a window of competitive football. Two hundred and fifteen pounds is a rounding error against the earnings of the most commercially valuable footballer of the modern era.

That gap is not an oversight. National federation disciplinary codes are written around fixed schedules set years ago and denominated for domestic professionals, while the sanction that actually has teeth — availability — is calibrated in time rather than money. The result is a penalty structure in which the financial component is symbolic by construction.

The separate dispute

The suspension arrives in the same week that Erik ten Hag, Ronaldo's former manager at Manchester United, said publicly that the player "let the team and let me down" during the Dutchman's spell at Old Trafford. The two matters are unconnected, but they land together, and they frame the same question that has followed the player for four years: what a club or a federation can actually require of someone whose commercial standing exceeds their own.

Open

The federation has not published the specific provision of its disciplinary code under which the sanction was imposed, nor said whether the 30 days run consecutively from a stated date or across call-up windows. It has not been confirmed whether Ronaldo intends to appeal, or whether the suspension affects his availability for Portugal's remaining fixtures in the period. Ronaldo has not commented publicly on the decision.
