OpenAI Spent Two Days Building the Pieces of an App Store It Does Not Call One
Dots, an office suite, plugins with their own interfaces and automations, a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol, and reusable Codex environments — all inside 48 hours. Taken together they turn ChatGPT into a place where software is discovered and used, by people and by agents.

OpenAI shipped a run of announcements across 29 and 30 September that read individually as feature news and collectively as a distribution strategy: ChatGPT is being built into the place where other people's software gets found and run.
What actually landed
Dots, an agentic avatar meant to run independently of any particular device or interface, pursuing user-set goals in the background with minimal oversight. A suite of office features that puts OpenAI into direct competition with traditional productivity software. Plugins given dedicated sidebar homes, interactive panels, file viewers, better discovery and support for automations. GPT-6.1 Sol, which OpenAI says nearly matches GPT-6 Astra at lower cost. And Codex with reusable cloud development environments that follow a developer across machines.
Alongside it, reports that the company is in talks to raise $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation, anticipated to be its last round before a delayed 2027 listing.
The app-store comparison is not a metaphor
An app store is four things: a catalogue, a discovery surface, a runtime, and a billing relationship with the end user. The plugin changes supply the first three. Once software is discovered and executed inside a chat interface, the developer's relationship is with OpenAI's ranking, not with a home screen — and the same shift that moved margin to Apple and Google is available to be made again.
The agent layer sharpens it. If Dots and its successors are the thing selecting which tool to invoke, the customer being marketed to is a model, not a person. Discoverability becomes an API-surface and evaluation question rather than a brand one.
What it means from Addis
For a small Ethiopian software business, the direction of travel cuts both ways. Distribution through an assistant with hundreds of millions of users is reachable without a marketing budget, which is genuinely new. But it is rented ground, denominated in dollars, with pricing and ranking set elsewhere — and for a firm billing in birr, an input cost that resets on someone else's schedule is a real exposure, not an abstract one.
Open
OpenAI has not published pricing, revenue-share terms or ranking criteria for the expanded plugin surface. The $30 billion round is reported, not confirmed, and the company has not commented on the valuation.
