Prosperity Party Nominates Abiy Ahmed for a Second Five-Year Term

Temesgen Tiruneh, speaking for the Prosperity Party, nominated Abiy Ahmed to lead Ethiopia as Prime Minister for five years on Monday, as the 7th House of People's Representatives held the first regular session of its first working year.

The nomination came on the day the federal government was formally constituted. Fana reported that the joint inauguration of the House of People's Representatives and the House of Federation was attended by Abiy and President Taye Atsike Selassie, along with senior officials and invited guests.

The last piece of a government assembled region by region

The federal seating closes a sequence that has run for several days. Regional councils have been meeting to form their own administrations, confirming chief administrators and approving cabinets, and the federal chamber was the last body left to convene.

As the party holding the chamber, Prosperity nominates the Prime Minister. Tikvah reported that the cabinet appointments the Prime Minister proposes are expected to be approved by the same chamber.

What a business reader should watch

The nomination itself settles little that was in doubt. What follows it does: the cabinet list, and in particular who takes the economic portfolios that changed hands on Monday. Ahmed Shide, who ran the Finance Ministry through the currency float and the IMF programme, was elected Speaker of the same chamber hours earlier, leaving the ministry without a named successor.

Open

No cabinet list had been published when the chamber rose. The Finance Ministry, the single portfolio that matters most to anyone financing or importing into Ethiopia, has no announced occupant. Neither the party nor the Prime Minister's office has said when the appointments will be put to the chamber.
