A Former Plaud Executive Raises $26m for an App That Always Listens

Ambi, founded by a former executive of the AI recording-device company Plaud, has raised 26 million dollars to build an application that captures audio continuously in the background. It is shipping on iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch.

The hardware lesson, applied to software

Plaud sold a dedicated device for recording and summarising conversations. Ambi's founder appears to have concluded that the device was the least durable part of that business — that if ambient capture is valuable, it belongs on the phone and watch a person already carries, not on a second object they have to remember.

Running on the Apple Watch is the detail that signals intent. A watch is worn rather than carried, and it is in the room for conversations a phone on a desk is not. That is the product's claim and also its problem.

Who else is in the room

An app that records continuously records everyone nearby, including people who did not install it and were not asked. That is a consent question before it is a feature, and it is governed very differently across jurisdictions — some require every party to a conversation to agree, others only one.

For an Ethiopian business, the practical question is narrower and more immediate: whether a meeting can be captured by one participant's watch without the others knowing, and whether anything said in it can later be produced. Tools of this kind arrive in workplaces well before policies for them do.

Open

The investors in the round, the valuation, and whether audio is processed on the device or in the cloud were not disclosed in the launch coverage. That last point determines almost everything about the privacy exposure, and it is the question worth asking first.
